Learn how core ABA principles like shaping and differential reinforcement are used to teach complex behaviors across species, and explore how behavior analysts apply these methods in the field of animal training.

THE SAME SCIENCE, DIFFERENT SPECIES.

Animal trainers and behavior analysts rely on the same behavioral science principles to teach new skills.
This course introduces how shaping procedures are used to build complex behaviors through successive approximations and differential reinforcement. You’ll explore how measurable dimensions of behavior can be shaped, how trainers identify target behaviors, and how shaping procedures are applied across different species.

Through real examples from animal training, you’ll see how the science of Applied Behavior Analysis extends beyond traditional clinical settings and into fields like dog training, animal enrichment, and human–animal interaction.

By the end of this course, you’ll understand how shaping procedures are used to teach new behaviors and how these principles apply to animal behavior training.

WHY ATTEND?

HANDS ON PRACTICE

Participate in shaping exercises designed to demonstrate how successive approximations and differential reinforcement are used to teach new skills. You will practice identifying measurable behaviors and planning shaping procedures across species.

GREAT RESOURCES

Gain access to examples, demonstrations, and real-world applications of shaping procedures used in animal behavior training, along with guidance on how behavior analysts can enter the animal behavior field.

INCREASE YOUR PROFESSIONAL IMPACT

Expand your understanding of how ABA principles apply beyond traditional clinical settings. This course highlights how behavior analysts contribute to fields like animal training, enrichment design,
and human–animal interaction
research.

Whether you’re a behavior analyst interested in animal training or exploring new applications of ABA beyond traditional clinical work, this course introduces how shaping procedures are used to teach complex behaviors across species.

PHD, BCBA-D, VSA-CDT , FEAR FREE CERTIFIED
Since 2014, Dr. Berger has been a licensed and board certified behavior analyst providing services to people in a variety of behavior change areas. In 2020, she completed her Ph.D. in Applied Behavior Analysis, and in 2021 published research on combined therapy interventions for health and behavior. Dr. Berger has worked in the field of psychology for over a decade, and as a psychology professor at several colleges and universities.

After learning so much from her own two dogs, she studied positive reinforcement training strategies at the Victoria Stilwell Academy. She became a VSA certified dog trainer and obtained her Fear Free certification. and has spent the last few years working as a trainer and a researcher in animal behavior. Etana looks forward to sharing more about animal behavior and the opportunities for BCBAs in this sub-field in this interactive course!
