Online misinformation isn't simply the result of poor decision-making or a lack of critical thinking. Social media platforms operate as behavioral systems that arrange environmental contingencies, reinforce engagement, and influence how information spreads across digital communities.

In this course, you'll explore behavioral systems analysis as a framework for understanding misinformation beyond the individual. You'll examine concepts like interlocking behavioral contingencies, cultural selection, metacontingencies, and aggregate products to better understand why misinformation persists, even when accurate information is readily available.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Dr.Liza Bergman-Geonie

PhD, M.S.Ed., BCBA-D, LBA
Dr. Liza Bergman-Geonie is a BCBA-D, New York Licensed Behavior Analyst  and OBM practitioner with 28 years of experience in behavior analysis and systems-level intervention.

During her doctoral studies, Liza developed a passion for understanding online misinformation through the lens of behavioral science. Her research explored why people share misinformation online and evaluated behavioral interventions designed to increase the sharing of credible information on social media. Since then, she has presented this work internationally, published on the topic, and spoken on multiple behavior analysis podcasts.

Liza brings together decades of applied experience with original research to help behavior analysts better understand the behavioral principles driving online misinformation and how those principles can be applied to encourage more accurate, evidence-based information sharing. She enjoys helping behavior analysts apply behavioral science to better understand today's digital information landscape and is excited to share the findings from her research in this course.
