High-control groups can shape behavior through powerful social contingencies, including belonging, approval, punishment, isolation, and loss. In this course, you’ll use behavior analysis to examine how those contingencies can affect choice, decision-making, and self-determination.

In this course, you’ll explore what autonomy can mean when someone’s options are socially, emotionally, and practically costly. You’ll also consider the ethical challenges of professional influence, including how to support meaningful choice without becoming another source of control.

By the end of this course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how environments shape autonomy, how power can operate through social networks, and how behavior analysts can support choice with humility, care, and ethical clarity.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Maya Griffin

M.A., BCBA, LSSYB
Maya has worked in behavior analysis since 2009 and has been a BCBA since 2012. Her work spans clinical ABA, supervision, staff training, OBM, process improvement, and consulting, giving her a strong foundation for examining how behavior is shaped across complex social and organizational systems.

Maya has experience applying behavior analysis to complex social and organizational environments and teaching ethics, OBM, and systems-level behavior analysis to BCBAs and supervisees. She developed this course using published research on high-control groups and behavior-analytic research on social influence, power, cultural practices, and choice, along with the BACB Ethics Code. She is excited to help learners use behavior analysis to better understand autonomy, coercive control, and what it means to support meaningful choice with care and ethical clarity.

This course is for behavior analysts, supervisees, OBM practitioners, and other professionals interested in using behavior analysis to better understand autonomy, social influence, coercive control, and meaningful choice in complex social environments.

Are there any pre-requisite skills? 

A basic understanding of behavioral phenomena (e.g., reinforcement, punishment and extinction) and a desire to engage is all you need for this course. 

What if I'm not certified through the BACB? 

That's okay! In lieu of CEUs, you'll get a certificate of completion.
